Fribourg 1717 schilling

Sincona sale 97, part of lot 3160

This specimen was part of lot 3160 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), which sold for 170 CHF (about US$247 including buyers' fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Schilling 1717, Freiburg. Drei Varianten. Die Jahreszahl 17 - 17 wird durch eine kleine Burg geteilt. Sehr schön. (3) Exemplare der Studie zu Halbbatzen, Schillingen, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller von Freiburg i. Üe./Fribourg. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, schilling of 1717, Fribourg mint, a set of three varieties. The date is divided by a small tower. Very Fine, three pieces.)"

Das Kapitel Freiburg im Üechtland / Fribourg beinhaltet eine grössere Partie von Scheidemünzen des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, bei denen eine grosse Anzahl Stempelvarianten in vielen Losen zusammengefasst wurden. Der betreffende Sammler hat sich die Mühe gemacht, die Halbbatzen, Schillinge, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller (früher als einseitige Deniers bezeichnet) nach Varianten zu sammeln, und er hat dies auch dokumentiert. So ist eine Arbeit entstanden, welche bis heute noch niemand zusammengestellt hat. (The Fribourg section of this auction contains a large collection of minor coins from the 17th to 19th centuries, with a large number of die variants grouped into many lots. The collector in question took the trouble to collect the half-batzen, shillings, kreuzers, vierer, and 2/3 hallers (formerly known as uniface deniers) by variety, and he also documented this process. The result is a collection that no one has ever compiled before.)

This schilling was struck 1717 only. It has a modest catalog value. Forty schilling made a thaler.
