Goldberg sale 128, lot 1337
G128-1337r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1337 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $1,260. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Double Louis d'or au buste nu, 1789-T (Nantes). Louis XVI. Head left. Reverse: Crown over two rectangular shields of France and Navarre. Luster. Pop 1; only 2 graded at PCGS, the other is AU-53. PCGS graded AU-55." A slightly scarce double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Lille mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 9,879, a better date[2].

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 877, Dr/2 № 604, Duplessy 1706, Fr-474; Gad-363; KM-592.14.
