The first specimen was lot 447 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 2,700 CHF (about US$3,240 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Bretagne, Herzogtum, Francois II. 1458-1488. Cavalier dor o. J. Nantes. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (France, duchy of Brittany, Francis II, 1458-88, undated cavalier d'or, Nantes mint. Rare, Good very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 99041 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $3,720. The catalog description[2] noted,

"France: Brittany. François II gold Ecu d'Or au chevalier ND (1458-1488) AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Rennes mint. + • FRΛnCISCVS • DЄI • GRΛCIΛ • | • BRIT?n • DVX (mullet stops), François, crowned and armored on horseback, brandishing sword in right hand, and holding shield in left, advancing right / + • DЄVS • InΛDIVTORIVm • mЄVm • In • TΛnDЄ • R (mullet stops), cross fleuillue with each limb terminating in trefoil, ermines in angles, all within quatrefoil. A scarce and seemingly unpublished legend variety in Poey d'Avant, Bigot, and Jézéquel. Not unusual to find with at least minor evidence of cleaning, this becomes virtually a moot point for such an attractive example at this, its rims unchipped and flan even resulting in a visual quality that few managed to achieve."

This coin was issued by the duke of Brittany and was obviously inspired by the franc à cheval of the previous century, altho the weight matches the écu d'or of Louis XI.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.37 g, .958 fine gold, the first specimen 3.37 g, the second specimen 3.33 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 333. Fr-96; the second specimen Fr-96, PdA-1312 var. (with stop between In and TANDE), Dup-334, Boudeau-Unl., Bigot-1205 var. (with stop between IN and TANDE), Jéz-386b3 var. (same).
