Jean Elsen sale 155, lot 1450

This specimen was lot 1450 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,834 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, BRETAGNE, Duché, Anne (1488-1491), AR blanc à la targe, été 1491, Rennes. Frappé pendant le siège de Rennes par l'armée royale. D/ + ANNA BRITONVM DVCISSA R Targe échancrée, chargée de huit mouchetures. R/ + SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTVM Croix fourchée et échancrée. Moucheture en début de légende et point sous la croisette initiale. Extrêmement rare. Patine foncée. Beau à Très Beau. Monnaie de nécessité frappée pendant le siège de Rennes par l"armée royale. Par ordonnace ducale du 29 juillet 1491, la frappe de blancs fut ordonnée à Rennes en utilisant le métal provenant de la vaisselle de la duchesse. Ces monnaies se distinguent par le point gravé sous la croisette initiale. (France, duchy of Brittany, Anne, 1488-91, silver blanc of the shield, struck during the siege of Rennes by the royal army. Obverse: notched shield charged with eight ermines; reverse: forked and notched cross, ermine at the start of the legend and dot below the initial crosslet. Extremely rare, nice patina, Fine - Very Fine. Emergency money minted during the siege of Rennes by the royal army. By ducal ordinance of July 29, 1491, the minting of blancs was ordered in Rennes using metal from the Duchess's tableware. These coins are distinguished by the point engraved under the initial cross.)"

"Anne of Brittany (1477–1514) was reigning Duchess of Brittany from 1488 until her death, and Queen of France from 1491 to 1498 and from 1499 to her death. She was the only woman to have been queen consort of France twice. During the Italian Wars, Anne also became Queen of Naples, from 1501 to 1504, and Duchess of Milan, in 1499–1500 and from 1500 to 1512."
