France H3064-30753r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30753 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIV gold Louis d'or 1693-K AU53 PCGS, Bordeaux mint. A pretty buttercup-gold selection and well-executed for this type, milder host coin attributes showing than some (besides a lis from the host coin showing on Louis's neck). A higher grade than average for issue and a desirable coin." This type, known as a louis d'or aux 4 L, was struck in France 1693-1700, mostly over older coins. Twenty-four mints contributed in 1693.

Recorded mintage: 2,220 (new, rare) plus 60,092 (restruck, fairly common) plus 2,222 (restruck) of louis d'or à l'écu (Dr/4 № 406).

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-433; Gad-252; Dup-1439; KM 302.11, Gad-252, Dr/4 № 412, Dr/2 № 266.
