Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73048

This specimen was lot 73048 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 1/2 Real, 1656-Mo P. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS VF-20. Struck with a bold last three digits of the date which is highly unusual. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection." This date is not listed in Cayón but is mentioned in the SCWC, which notes 1622, 1650, 1653-62. Dated half real cobs from Mexico are rare.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.931 fine silver, .050 troy oz ASW.
