Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2844

This specimen was lot 2844 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 45 € (about US$58 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1814. Fernando VII. Lima. JP. 4 reales. BC/BC+ [fine or better]." This specimen is one of a series struck 1811-21 during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted finding about one-fourth as many Peruvian four reales of Charles IV as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce. Assayer "JP" is noted for the years 1803-23.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver, this specimen 12,70 g.

Catalog reference: KM 116, AC. 1068, Cayón-15701.
