Peru 1817-L JP 4 reales
This specimen was lot 6029 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $57.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 4 Reales, 1817 JP (Lima). Ferdinand VII. Laureate head. Toned. About Very Fine. The Victor Jaramillo Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1811-21 during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted finding about one-fourth as many Peruvian four reales of Charles IV as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce. Assayer "JP" is noted for the years 1803-23.
