This specimen was lot 1254 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles IV, 1803 JP, extremely rare, NGC AU details / obv cleaned, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Deep purple toning all over except for field in front of face (the "cleaned" part note by NGC), with underlying luster, minor lamination flaws on bust, another date (like last lot) that is not listed in any reference (including Murray, de la Puente, Calicó, KM, etc), hence possibly unique. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This type was struck 1792-1808 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
