India 1945-L 1/4 rupee

Sedwick sale 25, lot 1134

The quarter rupee was struck for George VI 1943-45 at Calcutta, Lahore and Bombay. It is about the size of a dime but had 5¢ worth of silver. This specimen was lot 1134 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $4,165. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Lahore, India (British), original proof 1/4 rupee, 1945-L, George VI, normal 5, PCGS PR65, finest and only example in PCGS census. Deeply rainbow toned and devoid of any marks or wear, quite a bit better than the Pittman specimen in Baldwin's in 2013, also rare as an original proof (not a restrike) with original mint envelope, in fact tied with just one other at the same grade in the NGC census. (See note in lot 1132.) PCGS #36334455. With original His Majesty's Mint paper envelope."

Recorded mintage: 29,751,000. small 5 is common, large 5 is rare.
