This specimen was lot 1311 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $5750. The catalog description[1] noted, "1908 C sovereign. Ottawa mint. SP-64 (NGC). Head of Edward VII to right, legends around/ Pistrucci's St. George and dragon motif, mintmark on ground below horse, date below. Warm yellow-orange gold, satiny lustre. Well struck. This issue, the first sovereign struck in Canada, was produced to the extent of 636 pieces, all Specimens issued in sets to commemorate the opening of the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa. Seldom offered, especially so fine. The Belzberg coin was graded PCGS SP-62 (at $2,087). An important opportunity for collectors of the gold coins of Canada. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type is also recorded for 1909-10, which dates are much more available than the 1908. George V sovereigns were struck 1911-19.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 7.99 grams, 21.90 mm diameter.
