After independence in 1947-48, the British rupee was withdrawn and replaced by a note. One rupee coins were struck 1952, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1969 but never on a production basis. This type was introduced in aluminum in 1965; this subtype was struck for circulation 1968-71. In 1982, US$1 = 9.3 rupees; today (July 2024), one US dollar = 84 rupees. This denomination was suspended in 1979, inflation having rendered it worthless.

Recorded mintage: 5,335,000 plus 9,147 proofs. Only the proofs have the "B" mintmark.

Specification: 1 g, aluminum, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 13.5.
