This specimen was lot 2457 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $199.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA: Republic, rupee, 1970(b). Rare one-year type for circulation (later dates exist, in proof sets only), Unc, RR." After independence in 1947-48, the British rupee was withdrawn and replaced by a note. One rupee coins were struck 1952, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1969 but never on a production basis. This type was struck for circulation 1970 only and for the proof sets of 1970-74.
Recorded mintage: unknown plus 3,046 proofs.
