After independence in 1947-48, the British rupee was withdrawn and replaced by a note. One rupee coins were struck 1952, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1969 but never on a production basis. This type was struck for circulation in India 1972-79. The circulaton figure given below includes production from Calcutta and Hyderabad. In 1982, US$1 = 9.3 rupees; today (July 2022), one US dollar = 79 rupees. This denomination was suspended in 1979, inflation having rendered it worthless.

Recorded mintage: 7,562 proofs plus many more struck for circulation without mintmark.

Specification: 1 g, aluminum, 19.84 mm diameter.
