After independence in 1947-48, the British rupee was withdrawn and replaced by a note. One rupee coins were struck 1952, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1969 but never on a production basis. This type was struck for circulation in India 1972-88 and for the proof sets of 1970-78. The circulaton figure given below includes production from Hyderabad. In 1982, US$1 = 9.3 rupees; today (July 2022), one US dollar = 79 rupees.

Recorded mintage: 7,895 proofs plus 367,640,000 struck for circulation without mintmark.

Specification: 2.5 g, nickel, 19 mm diameter.
