India 1972-B 10 rupees
This specimen was lot 76171 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 10 Rupees, 1972-B. Bombay Mint. NGC PROOF-68 Cameo. Struck to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Independence. Ex: Sanjay C. Gandhi Collection." This type was struck at Calcutta and Bombay. The Calcutta issue has no mintmark, the Bombay proofs have a "B" (shown here) and the circulation issue has a diamond. It is not rare altho the low fineness means many specimens have spots or PVC. This design was also used on a copper-nickel fifty paise (KM 60).
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 with a diamond and 7,895 with a "B".
Specification: 22.5 g, 0.500 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM-187.1.
