Aureo sale 238, lot 515

This specimen was lot 515 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 650 euro (about US$1,031 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1728. Sevilla. P. 8 reales. Buen ejemplar. Rara. MBC+. (Eight reales of 1728, Seville mint. Nice example, rare, choice very fine.)"

This type, the ancestor of the familiar pillar dollar of Latin America, is recorded in the SCWC for Spain for 1728-29. Both dates are tough. It is the first eight reales struck at Seville since 1718.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9313, Cal. 938, KM 336.3, Dav-1697.
