This specimen was lot 772 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $1,130.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, bust 1 real, Charles IV transitional (bust of Charles III, ordinal IV/III), 1789DA, NGC VF 35, finest and only example in NGC census. Bold strike with minor rim-flaw at 10 o'clock and die-clashing at 5 o'clock on obverse, deeply toned over muted luster (at least XF in our opinion). NGC #5846728-007." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint. This specimen is a transitional type issued at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV.
Recorded mintage: 109,000 including KM-29.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver.
