Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74614
SB923-74614r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74614 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1668. Zellerfeld Mint. Johann Friedrich. PCGS AU-50. A lightly circulated example with argent and champagne toning. An unusual variety without the '6' in the obverse field at right. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This wild man six mariengroschen exists for 1668-79 with (KM 120.1) and without (KM 120.2) the "6" next to the wild man. Six mariengroschen was one-sixth thaler or one quarter gulden. Another six mariengroschen was struck with a leaping stallion reverse (KM 121). The photo in the SCWC for this type shows a four mariengroschen with a St. Andrew reverse (KM 143).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-120.2; cf. Welter-1780.
