Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 3205
Australia Stacks Jan15-3205r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3205 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Florin, 1918-M. NGC AU-50. Light multicolored tone." The silver coinage for Australia commenced in 1910 but bronze pennies and halfpennies were not struck until 1911. As such, none were struck with the effigy of Edward VII. This type was struck 1911-36 at London, Heaton, Sydney and Melbourne. The dates prior to the late twenties are scarce, especially in nice condition. Australia maintained the sterling silver standard until 1945, years after Great Britain had debased her coins to 0.500 fine.

Recorded mintage: 1,677,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 11.31 g, 0.925 fine silver, .336 troy oz ASW, designed by W. H. J. Blakemore.

Catalog reference: KM 27.
