This specimen was lot 24660 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $4,887.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Frederick III Krone 1659, AU53 NGC, light original patina with minor haymarking. Obverse with DOMINVS * PROVIDEBIT. (Incorrectly attributed to Dav-3576 on the holder.) The design features a sword reaching down from the clouds smiting a hand reaching for the crown." This is one of several closely related kroner or four mark pieces issued 1659-60 (Dav-3576, Dav-3576A and Dav-3578). King Frederick III ruled 1648-70; one may assume the obverse design had political significance at the time. Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. Either they were melted extensively or the poverty of the king prevented large issues or both. This type is not the most expensive but still runs five times the price of a contemporary thaler from Brunswick or Saxony.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 22.27 g, .671 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 223, Dav-3578.
