This specimen was lot 31237 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Mint Error -- Struck over Mexico 20 Pesos -- 5 Cents, 1986. Winnipeg Mint. PCGS MS-62. A very intriguing and no doubt EXEPTIONALLY RARE mint error, this type, struck upon a 5 Pesos host coin (KM-508) of Mexico. Indeed, one can even make out traces of said host. Given the fact that Canada was not striking coins for Mexico, this Potosi-based host coin would appear to be the product of mint sport." The host coin was not a five pesos but a twenty pesos. The normal copper-nickel five cents was struck in this style 1982-89 at Ottawa and Winnipeg. All dates are common.
Recorded mintage: 156,104,000 plus 176,224 proofs.
Specification: 4.54 g, copper-nickel, 21.2 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Thomas Shingles and George Kruger Gray.
Catalog reference: KM-60.2a.
