Aureo sale 232, lot 1260

The specimen shown was lot 1260 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 396 euros (about US$653 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1773. Santiago. DA. 2 reales. Leves rayitas, pero ejemplar muy digno. Rara. MBC/MBC+. (Charles III, 1759-88, Two reales of 1773, Santiago mint, light scratches but still acceptable, rare, very fine.)

This type was issued from Santiago 1773-89 and this is the key date.

Recorded mintage: 14,000.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.
