Sincona sale 77, lot 3082

This specimen was lot 3082 in Sincona sale 77 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$14,566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SWEDEN. Karl XIV. Johann, 1818-1844. 2 Dukaten 1836, Stockholm. Mit der Signatur CB (Christopher Borg, Münzmeister in Stockholm). Selten. Nur 1'500 Exemplare geprägt. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. (kingdom of Sweden, Rare. Only 1,500 pieces struck, Cabinet piece.)"

Ducats of various types were issued in Sweden throughout the nineteenth century until 1868. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type is listed for 1830, 1836-42 and is rare. It is accompanied by ducats (Fr-87) and quadruple ducats (Fr-85). Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today.
