Sweden 1837-CB ducat Fr-87
This specimen was lot 1051 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $3,630. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Karl XIV Johan. 1818–1844. AV Ducat. Stockholm mint. Christopher Borg, engraver. Dated 1837 CB. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Superb choice BU. Extremely high grade for this type and only graded coin of this date." Ducats of various types were issued in Sweden throughout the nineteenth century until 1868. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type is listed for 1835-43 and is scarce but not rare. Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today.
