Sincona sale 38, lot 1932

This specimen was lot 1932 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$11,993 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Karl XIV. Johann, 1818-1844 4 Dukaten 1839. Stockholm. Sehr selten. Nur 2000 Exemplare geprägt. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XIV John, 1818-44, quadruple ducat of 1839, Stockholm mint. Very rare. Only 2000 pieces struck. About extremely fine.)"

Ducats of various types were issued in Sweden throughout the nineteenth century until 1868. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type is listed for 1837-43 and is rare. It is accompanied by ducats (KM 628a) and double ducats (KM 629). Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today.

Recorded mintage: 2,000.

Specification: 13.94 g, .976 fine gold, .437 troy oz AGW, this specimen 13.89 g.

Catalog reference: Ahlström 3, Schl. 44, Fr-85, KM 645.
