This specimen was lot 26 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 4 escudos, 1639 R, rare, NGC AU 55. Very choice full cross with distinctive ornaments in quadrants, good full shield with bold full crown above, clear denomination IIII, bottoms of 639 of date visible (not mentioned on label), yellow color." This style of cob was struck intermittently 1630-65 at Seville (shown here) and Madrid.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.
Specification: 13.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 13.44 grams.
