Spain 1638-MD P 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 184 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €6,300 (about US$8,314 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1638. Felipe IV. MD (Madrid). A/P. 4 escudos. Todos los datos perfectos. Preciosa pátina de monetario. Bellísima. Muy rara y más así. Sólo 2 conocidas. EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Philip IV, 1621-65, four escudos of 1638, Madrid mint. All the data is clear, nice patina, exquisite, very rare thus, only two known, extremely fine.)"
This type is listed in the SCWC for 1629-32, 1636-38, 1641-46, 1651, 1655, 1660, 1664-65. The auction cataloguers describe this example as A/P for the assayer but we believe it to be P/A. Cayón lists this date with assayers H and P.
