The first specimen was lot 1401 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIAN EMPIRE: Nicholas I, 1825-1855, AR 5 kopeks, 1855, Saint Petersburg Mint, assayer Constantine Butenev, a wonderful mint state example, PCGS graded MS64, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." The second specimen was lot 407 in Sincona sale 84 (Zurich, October 2023), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$875 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, 5 Kopecks 1855, St. Petersburg Mint, SPB NI. NGC MS66. Beautiful condition with magnificent patina."
This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today seldom seen in nice condition. In 1860 the coin was lowered to 0.750 fine and then in 1867 lowered to 0.9 g, 0.500 fine. A copper five kopeks was issued from the Ekaterinburg mint in 1855.
Recorded mintage: 640,000, a slightly better date.
Specifications: 1.03 g, 0.868 fine silver, the second specimen 0.93 g.
