from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 659

This specimen was lot 659 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €480 (about US$608 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Pie VI (1775-1799), (Giovanni Angelo Braschi), AV doppia romana, 1787, Rome. D/ FLORET IN DOMO DOMINI Plant de lis. R/ APOSTOLOR PRINCEPS Saint Pierre trônant de f. sur une nuée. Beau à Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Pius VI (1775-99), gold doppia romana of thirty paoli, 1787, Rome mint. Obverse: lily plant; reverse: St. Peter enthroned on a cloud. Fine to very fine.)"

This type was issued 1786-93 and is not rare in circulated condition. It varied from the earlier issue of 1776-85 by deleting the "30 P" from the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.469 g, 0.917 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 5,42 g.

Catalog reference: Munt. 4a; KM 1049, Fr-246, Berman 2953.
