Sincona sale 38, lot 1599

This specimen was lot 1599 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Pio VI. 1775-1799 2 Doppie 1787. Bologna. Vorzüglich. Etwas poröser Schrötling. (Papal States, Pius VI, 1775-99, double doppia of 1787, Bologna mint, Extremely fine. Tiny flan defects.)"

This type was struck 1786-87 with (KM 317, shown here) or without the regnal year (KM 311) on the obverse. As a "double double" ducat, it should weigh 14 grams but is lighter.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, .322 troy oz AGW, this specimen 10.87 g.
