Papal States 1787 10 zecchini Fr-390
The first specimen was lot 2916 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIA | Vaticano - Stato Pontificio. Pio VI. 1775-1799 10 Zecchini 1787 AN XII. Bologna. Rara. Spl. (Papal States, Pius VI, 1775-99, ten zecchini of 1787, year XIII, Bologna mint. Rare, extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 32283 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[2] noted, "Italy: Papal States. Pius VI gold 10 Zecchini Anno XII (1787) MS61 NGC, Bologna mint. Obv. St. Peter seated facing among the clouds, raising hand in benediction and holding scepter; coat-of-arms to lower left and right. Rev. Garnished coat-of-arms surmounted by papal tiara and keys crossed in saltire. A delightful and imposing Papal gold issue, replete with shimmering golden brilliance in the fields that sweeps and envelopes devices crafted with a sufficiently textured finish so as to stand in subtle contrast against the lower-lying regions surrounding." This rare type from the Bologna mint, the largest gold coin issued by the papacy in the eighteenth century, is listed for 1786-87 only. It is accompanied by a gold five zecchini (Fr-391).
