Papal St Fr-247 rev Tom F.jpg

This type was issued 1776-87 for Pius VI (1774-99). After striking zecchini fairly steadily 1738-84, the denomination was suddenly dropped in favor of a series of mezze doppie (Fr-247), doppie (Fr-246) and due doppie (Fr-245). The type doesn't fit into the already chaotic papal coinage system nor does it match the doppie of her neighbors, such as Naples and Sardinia. The series was also minted in Bologna (see Fr-385).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .080 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-247; KM 1050, Ber-2956.
