from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 660

This specimen was lot 660 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €670 (about US$849 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Pie VI (1775-1799), (Giovanni Angelo Braschi), doppia romana, 1787, Bologne. D/ Plant de lis. R/ Ecus accolés du cardinal Archetti et de la ville de Bologne. Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Pius VI (1775-99), gold doppia romana of thirty paoli, 1787, Bologna mint. Obverse: lily plant; reverse: joint arms of the cardinal and the city of Bologna. Very fine.)"

The SCWC catalogs this as two types: KM 310 (shown here) issued 1786-92 with initials "GP". KM 314 was issued 1787-88 without initials. It is substantially rarer than the Rome issue (Fr-246).
