This specimen was lot 31595 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Confederation 20 Rappen 1851-BB MS64 PCGS, Strasbourg mint. As with many of the coins in this collection, this piece is the rarest issue of the type. Boldly struck, with fully lustrous, satiny surfaces. A hint of russet patina, with only minor spotting. Only a single piece has been certified finer by PCGS and NGC. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." This type was struck 1850-51 at Strasbourg and 1858-59 at Bern. When the twenty rappen was resumed in 1881, it was a nickel coin.
Recorded mintage: 11,559,783 for 1850-51.
Specification: billon, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM 7, HMZ-21209b.
