This specimen was lot 4274 in Sincona sale 67 (Zurich, October 2020), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$527 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"IRAN | Pahlavi Dynasty | Rezâ Shâh, 1344-1360 H./1304-1320 ShH./1925-1941 AD, Gold coinage. 1 Pahlavi 1306 ShH/1927 AD. In wreath military bust to right between the accession date 1304, legend above Pahlavî shâhânshâh-i Irân and minting date below, value in a circle surrounded by a crowned wreath. ANACS MS61."</blockquote> When Reza Shah seized the throne in 1925, he adopted the solar Hegira calendar, which used the Gregorian calendar but deducted 621 years. Thus, SH 1306 = 1927 AD. The gold pahlavi was introduced in SH 1306-1308 to supersede the toman issued by the Qajars. Two and five pahlavi were issued. Originally 1.92 g, it was raised to 8.14 g after SH1310.

Sincona sale 67, lot 4274
Goldberg sale 122, lot 1865
G119-1865r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 4274 in Sincona sale 67 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$527 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN | Pahlavi Dynasty | Rezâ Shâh, 1344-1360 H./1304-1320 ShH./1925-1941 AD, Gold coinage. 1 Pahlavi 1306 ShH/1927 AD. In wreath military bust to right between the accession date 1304, legend above Pahlavî shâhânshâh-i Irân and minting date below, value in a circle surrounded by a crowned wreath. ANACS MS61."

The second specimen was lot 1865 in Goldberg sale 122 (Los Angeles, June 2021), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[2] noted, "Iran. Pahlavi, SH1306 (1927). Reza Khan Pahlavi, 1925-1941. NGC graded AU-58." When Reza Shah seized the throne in 1925, he adopted the solar Hegira calendar, which used the Gregorian calendar but deducted 621 years. Thus, SH 1306 = 1927 AD. The gold pahlavi was introduced in SH 1306-1308 to supersede the toman issued by the Qajars. Two and five pahlavi were issued. Originally 1.92 g, it was raised to 8.14 g after SH1310.

Recorded mintage: 21,000.

Specification: 1.92 g, gold, the first specimen 2.82 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-94; KM-1114.
