from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73504
Spain SB620-73504r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73504 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Reales, 1712. Barcelona Mint. Charles III (the Pretender). PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Mostly steel gray surfaces yield to a high level of iridescence on this lightly handled pretender issue of Holy Roman Emperor Karl V, unsuccessful claimant to the Spanish throne following the death of Charles II." This type was issued in Barcelona 1707-14 on behalf of the Austrian archduke Charles, who as Charles III contended unsuccessfully with Philip V for the throne of Spain. It is fairly common in circulated condition and lists for less than the contemporary issues of Philip V.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM PT5, Cayón-7984.
