Ponterio sale 169, lot 10705

This specimen was lot 10705 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $460. The catalog description^[1] noted, "SPAIN. Barcelona. 2 Reales, 1711. Charles III The Pretender (1701-14). Highly lustrous and very attractive with golden toning throughout. NGC MS-64. From the Demarete Collection." This type was issued in Barcelona 1707-14 on behalf of the Austrian archduke Charles, who as Charles III contended unsuccessfully with Philip V for the throne of Spain. It is fairly common in circulated condition and lists for less than the contemporary issues of Philip V.
