Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1509

This specimen was lot 1509 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €100 (about US$125 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, UTRECHT, Provincie, AR daalder van 30 stuiver, 1686, Droit: Gekroond provinciewapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Revers: Gekroonde wapens van het bisdom en het graafschap Holland en daaronder van de stad Utrecht, tussen vier gekroonde wapens. Einde muntplaat. goede Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Utrecht, silver daalder of thirty stuivers of 1686. Obverse: crowned provincial arms supported by two lions; reverse: crowned arms of the diocese and county of Holland and the city of Utrecht between four crowned shields. Struck from the end of the strip, good very fine.)"

This daalder of thirty stuivers (or 1½ gulden) is noted for 1685-92 and is an obscure denomination, fitting uneasily among the half lion daalders, half rijksdaalders, half ducatons and silver half ducats.

Reported Mintage: 1,187,950 for 1685-91.

Specification: 15.88 g, 0.906 fine silver, this specimen 15,01 g.
