Schulman 385-0277r.jpg

This specimen was lot 277 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €140 (about US$198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ZWOLLE. 30 Stuiver of daalder, 1686, Silver Type II. Staande ridder met zwaard achter gekroond stadswapen aan de voet DA PAC: DO: IN - DI - NOSTRIS ❀. Kz. gekroond gevierendeeld stadswapen tussen waardeaanduiding 30 - ST. Aantrekkelijke patina. Zeer fraai/Zeer fraai. (city of Zwolle, thirty stuivers or daalder of 1686. Obverse: Obverse: standing knight with sword supports the city arms at his feet; reverse: crowned municpal arms divide the value. Attractive patina, very fine.)"

This one type of 1686, 1688 and 1692 is not common. Altho called a daalder, it is too light to compete with the silver ducats, ducatons and three gulden struck at the same time. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 15.88 g, 0.961 fine silver, .490 troy oz ASW, this specimen 15.89 g.
