Zwolle 1685 30 stuivers
This specimen was lot 276 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €500 (about US$708 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
Omschrift MO: NO: ARG: CIVIT: ZWOL I685. RRR. Prachtig +. (city of Zwolle, thirty stuivers or daalder of 1685. Obverse: Obverse: standing knight with sword supports the city arms at his feet; reverse: crowned municpal arms divide the value. Apart from a few planchet flaws, a handsome example with nice toning, choice extremely fine.)"
This one year type is rather scarce. Altho called a daalder, it is too light to compete with the silver ducats, ducatons and three gulden struck at the same time. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.
Recorded mintage: 91,650.
Specification: 15.88 g, 0.961 fine silver, .490 troy oz ASW, this specimen 15.59 g.
