Schulman 385-0279r.jpg

This specimen was lot 279 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$340 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ZWOLLE. 28 Stuiver of florijn, 1684, Silver Type IIIb. Gekroonde dubbele adelaar, waarde als 28 in het hart DA. PAC. DOM. IN. DIEB. NOSTRIS mmt. 6-bladige bloem. Kz. gekroond gecombineerd wapen, jaartal afgekort boven de kroon. Met binnencirkels op voor- en keerzijde. Vrijwel prachtig. (city of Zwolle, florin of 28 stuivers of 1684, type IIIb. Obverse: crowned double-headed eagle with value on its breast, mintmark six petalled rosette; reverse: crowned arms, date above, with inner circles on obverse and reverse. About fine.)"

This type was struck 1679-86 with the date in several locations, this one with the date above the crown. This and the 1686 are the only years with four digit dates. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 19.6 g, 0.673 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, this specimen 19.70 g.
