This specimen was lot 75032 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Utrecht. Liondaalder, 1688. PCGS EF-40. A truly phenomenal example of a SCARCE type, this charming example displays a pervasive golden hue tucked comfortably into the surfaces and a good strike quality for the type. This example is the only of the date to have been certified by PCGS, and consequently should attract much attention as opportunities to buy one do not arise often. Altogether, this is a wonderful representative of the series offered in this lot." "Lion" daalders were struck in Utrecht and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary. This subtype was struck 1679-1700 and is a very late issue for a leeuwendaalder.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-72, Dav-4866.
