Goldberg Sale 150, lot 923

This specimen was lot 923 in Goldberg Sale 150 (Los Angeles, February 2026), where it sold for $324. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Deventer. Lion Daalder, 1688. In NGC holder, labeled "America's First "Dollar" Coinage, Genuine. Our graded, Sharpness of Extremely Fine. Ex Manley Estate." This type was struck 1684-88 and 1691. The obverse legend is "MO · ARG · CIV · IMP BEL · DAVENTR", whereas the earlier Dav-4875 had "MO · ARG · CIVIT · IMPER · DAVENT". The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: 146,000 including a 1688/7 overdate.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4876; KM-80.
