Sincona sale 4, lot 5544
Heritage sale 3032, lot 26081
Chur 1633 thaler rev H3032-26081.jpg
Chur in Switzerland in 1648

The first specimen was lot 5544 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 3,100 CHF (about US$4,124 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Chur, Stadt Taler 1633. Stadtwappen in reich verzierter Kartusche. Rv. Gekrönter, nimbierter Doppeladler. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. Kleines Zainende, sonst vorzüglich-FDC. (Switzerland, city of Chur, obverse: city arms; reverse: crowned, nimbate double-headed eagle. nice extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 26081 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Chur. Canton Taler 1633, AU50 NGC. With title of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. A few minor marks in the reverse fields, yet boldly struck with an overall exceptional appearance. The ibex is found within the towers of the city on the obverse, with the Habsburg double eagle on the reverse. One can go years without seeing this Taler type." Chur, among with the rest of Switzerland, left the Empire in 1648 as part of the Treaty of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War. The city arms feature a leaping ibex.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,10 g.
