Jean Elsen sale 117, lot 1715
Ensisheim 1623 thaler rev JElsen 117-1715.jpg
Ensisheim in upper Alsace. The political situation is of 1477, on the collapse of the Burgundians. Upper Alsace would be ruled by the Hapsburgs until 1648 when it passed to France.

This specimen was lot 1715 in Jean Elsen sale 117 (Brussels, June 2013), where it sold for €125 (about US$197 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Léopold V, archiduc (1619-1632), AR Taler, 1623, Ensisheim. Au titre de landgrave d'Alsace. Droit: B. à droite. La date sous le buste. Revers: Ecu couronné. Léger défaut de flan sur la tranche. presque Très Beau. (Austria, archduke Leopold V (1619-32), Ensisheim mint, in the name of the landgrave of Alsace. Obverse: bust to right, date below; reverse: crowned arms. Minor rim defect, about very fine.)"

This type is mentioned by Davenport for 1621-24 and as common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.65 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-3345, Voglh-174/III, KM 257.1 (listed under Alsace).
