Sincona sale 94, lot 1641

This specimen was lot 1641 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 4,750 CHF (about US$6,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum. Georg Ludwig (Georg I.), 1698-1727. Dukat 1717, Clausthal. Sehr selten. Prachtexemplar. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1727, ducat of 1717, Clausthal mint. Very rare. NGC MS61 PL, Cabinet piece, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This scarce type was struck 1717, 1720-24 and 1727. Another ducat (KM 81) had a single shield on the reverse instead of the four shown here. A third ducat, struck from Harz gold (KM 103), had "AURB HERC" added below the bust.
