Künker sale 264, lot 3076

This specimen was lot 3076 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,875 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Louis d'or juvénile lauré 1660, I, Limoges. GOLD. Kl. Randfehler, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the young bust of 1660, Limoges mint. Edge flaws, choice extremely fine.)"

After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare, including this one, the louis d'or juvénile, minted in France 1659-83.

Recorded mintage: 1,166[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, designed by J. B Du Four, this specimen 6.66 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 1425; Fr-421; Gadoury 246, Dr/4 № 352, Dr/2 № 233.
