This specimen was lot 31330 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $19,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold Cob 2 Escudos 1731/29 Mo-F/G AU58 NGC, Mexico City mint. Amazing quality, possessing a strong, minimally doubled strike, sparkling luster in the fields and attractive rosy toning hues in the recesses. Fully dated, it's clear that this coin was struck from a reused die, but the overdate attribution provided by NGC seems to be mistaken, with magnified inspection appearing to show evidence of a '0' beneath the second '1', suggesting a previous 1730 date. Whatever the case, the date is extremely rare, and this is easily the most charming example we've seen. A real trophy coin for the cob specialist. Selections from the Isaac Rudman Numismatic Cabinet."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 grams, 0.917 fine gold, 0.199 troy oz AGW, this specimen 18 mm diameter, 6.8 g.
Catalog reference: KM 53.2, Cal-355 (Unlisted Overdate), Cayón-9719.
