This specimen was lot 23647 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,293.68. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1784-SF Popayán, AU Details NGC (rim filing), nicely struck with old-time rose gold patina in the legends, an attractive coin and the "rim filing" mentioned by NGC is not visible in the holder." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12960, KM 50.2.
